Dementia Capable Care® (DCC) is an evidence-based dementia and behaviour training program developed by the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI). It is designed to help healthcare workers and caregivers provide safer, more effective, and more person-centred support to individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
The program combines the Claudia Allen Cognitive Disabilities Model, person-centred care principles, and CPI de-escalation strategies. Participants learn how to understand functional cognition, recognize behaviour as communication, adapt care to a person’s remaining abilities, and prevent or de-escalate distress behaviours without relying solely on medication.
